As VP, CFO for Group Benefits and Pet, you’ll be responsible for leading financial product and pricing strategy, valuation, planning, and performance management to drive sustainable growth, profitability, and risk mitigation. You’ll lead a team that provides financial management to the businesses including timely, accurate, and actionable financial data, business and industry insights, pricing and underwriting leadership, and financial reporting and planning. You’ll partner and consult with business and matrix leadership on the development and execution of strategies that effectively position the businesses in extremely competitive industries. You’ll also be a member of Nationwide Financial’s (NF) Group Benefits Business Team, Corporate Solutions Finance Leadership Team, and the NF Extended Leadership Team.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serves as a key influencer and participant in the development and execution of strategies for Nationwide Group Benefits and Pet that are designed to balance long-term growth, profitability, competitiveness, and risk management in the businesses. Develops analytics, recommendations, and portfolio solutions in support of product management, pricing, operational capabilities, and risk/return constraints.  Responsible for gaining Product Risk Committee and NF Risk Committee approval when necessary.

  • Leads strategic evaluation and execution of acquisition opportunities to expand the Nationwide Group Benefits segment. Establishes clear investment criteria and strategic guardrails to guide corporate development activities.

  • Drives accelerated growth in the Pet insurance segment while maintaining disciplined risk management. Develops and implements strategies to expand market share, enhance product offerings, and optimize distribution channels. Ensures growth initiatives are aligned with enterprise risk appetite and profitability targets

  • Leads the businesses planning processes. Provides thought leadership, financial forecasting support, and key initiative reporting for the strategic plan. Develops the annual operating plan and supporting budgets (departmental, non-departmental, corporate allocation projections); and drives prioritization and funding of strategic and tactical initiatives based on the alignment with business plans and strategies.

  • Provides oversight and leadership to financial analytics and insights including financial modeling & analysis, acquisition/adoption analysis, product profitability and pricing, regulatory compliance and Board reporting, case retention and other ad-hoc requests, to ensure appropriate support of the management decision process.

  • Assesses and quantifies business risks and develops and implements risk management strategies, including reinsurance use and performance, in support of business tactics and goals. Monitors financial business performance against forecasts and assumptions; develops and assesses opportunities to support business decisions for resource allocation and prioritization around product development and innovation efforts. Analyzes distribution channel and firm profitability.

  • Actively participates in and influences the product development processes and supports operational teams in the business decision process. Manages and maintains pricing models and recommendations and develops and validates all assumptions including expenses and customer behavior.

  • Develops and cultivates an engaging environment for Group Benefits and Pet Finance associates that supports both personal and professional development and growth. Works across NF Finance on talent training, talent acquisition and development.

May perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Reporting Relationships:  Reports to VP, CFO – Corporate Solutions. Leads a team of 4-7 direct reports and approximately 50 indirect reports.

Typical Skills and Experiences:

Education:  Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Mathematics, or related field. MBA preferred.

License/Certification/Designation: FSA, CPA or similar certifications preferred.

Experience: Typically, 15+ years of progressive financial leadership experience, including at least 10 years in a senior executive role within a large, complex organization.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Deep understanding of financial forecasting, budgeting, and strategic planning. Expertise in GAAP and regulatory compliance. Knowledge of capital structure, investment analysis, and risk management. Understanding of the financial services industry, insurance, and investment management. Ability to lead large, cross-functional teams and develop future finance leaders. Strategic thinking with demonstrated skill in aligning financial goals with business strategy. Ability to present financial insights clearly to executives, boards, and stakeholders. Proven ability to lead financial transformation initiatives and adapt to evolving business needs. Collaborates effectively with internal and external stakeholders. Identify and implement process improvements and automation opportunities. Uphold the highest standards of financial integrity and corporate governance.

Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.

Staffing exceptions to the above must be approved by the hiring manager’s leader and HR Business Partner.
