Skills
- Strong photographic and visual storytelling experience in newsroom or creative agency settings.
- Ability to assign and support visual journalists in the field.
- Mastery of Adobe Creative Cloud applications including Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, and Premiere.
- Proficient writing and communication skills.
- Familiarity with copyright law and ethical journalism practices.
- Experience with content management systems.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines.
- Interest and understanding of current events.
Responsibilities
- Commission and edit original photography and illustrations for NPR platforms.
- Collaborate with reporters, writers, editors, and producers to identify visual storytelling opportunities.
- Coordinate with NPR security to ensure safety of photojournalists in the field.
- Manage contracts and invoices related to photographers, illustrators, agencies, and vendors.
- Direct and support photographers during assignments, providing feedback and briefings.
- Innovate and iterate visual projects for multiple digital channels including NPR.org, Instagram, YouTube, and emerging platforms.
- Edit, research, and license images for breaking news and enterprise stories.
- Handle photo imaging details including captions and credits.
- Research, pitch, write, and produce stories for NPR’s visuals vertical, The Picture Show.
- Contribute strategically to audience engagement on digital platforms.
- Uphold the highest journalistic and ethical standards in visual storytelling.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree preferred, ideally in film, video, media production, photography, or journalism.
