Program Description
The Derven Scholars program invites upper-level undergraduate students in the fields of social science, humanities, and education to work alongside HNOC’s Education Department. The Derven Scholars program aims to cultivate a collaborative environment in which staff and interns work together to create curriculum resources that are aligned with academic standards and are adaptable to various age groups and learning styles.
Derven Scholars will explore key themes, including audience engagement strategies and the integration of museum resources into classroom settings, by curating learning materials specific to HNOC exhibitions that foster critical thinking and historical inquiry.
Fall 2025 Project Theme
The Trail They Blazed, now on view at the Historic New Orleans Collection, serves as a poignant reminder of the struggles and triumphs of the Civil Rights Movement in New Orleans. This immersive exhibition features narratives from local activists who challenged systemic racism and social injustice. Through their first-hand accounts, visitors gain insight into the relentless spirit of resistance with which these individuals worked to confront and dismantle the oppressive structures of segregation.
This exhibition serves as an opportunity for contemporary audiences to reflect on ongoing struggles for social justice and encourages critical discourse about equity and inclusivity in Louisiana and beyond. In doing so, the exhibition not only honors those who fought valiantly for change but inspires current generations to advocate for a fairer society in which all voices are heard and valued.
The intern's role in designing and developing inclusive educational materials is vital for fostering a comprehensive understanding of this complex narrative.
