Youth Development Coordinator

Overview

Mattapan Food and Fitness Coalition (MFFC) (mattapanfoodandfit.org) grew out of an effort to draw on the wonderful ethnic and cultural diversity of the Mattapan community to promote a healthy living environment, with a focus on access to healthy foods and the promotion of physical fitness for all ages. Positive changes in these areas complement other efforts to decrease health problems like diabetes, heart disease, obesity and other health conditions that plague our community. MFFC is a fiscally sponsored organization of TSNE (tsne.org)

 

Mission Statement: MFFC builds intergenerational leadership within Mattapan’s Black and Brown community to advocate for equitable access to healthy foods and opportunities for physical activity.

Responsibilities

The Youth Development Coordinator will co-lead and support the Vigorous Youth program; strengthening the workforce readiness component of the program, strategically engaging with our partner organizations to provide more opportunities for Vigorous Youth to learn about healthcare and public health, and prepare them for a career in health. 

 

The Youth Development Coordinator supports the implementation and day-to-day operations of MFFC’s youth development program, which centers the voices, experiences, and leadership of young people in shaping a healthier, more equitable Mattapan. This role works directly with youth ages 14–21 to co-create programming that nurtures their social, emotional, educational, and physical development while building their capacity to understand and address the systems that impact their lives.

 

With a focus on topics like food access, transportation, and community health, the Youth Development Coordinator helps connect young people to civic engagement, personal growth, and community action. Through workshops, leadership development, and youth-led initiatives, the coordinator fosters a space where youth feel seen, valued, and empowered to advocate for change.

 

This position is temporary and is funded by a grant from the Atrius Health Equity Foundation and will end in 2029 with the possible opportunity to extend.

 

Essential Functions

 

Overall

  • Co-lead in the strategic direction and growth of the youth programs
  • Co-lead in the planning and implementation of academic year and summer planning which includes recruitment, hiring, curriculum building, keeping track of financials, marketing and communications of the program, etc.
  • Maintain program records, files, and documentation and submit documentation
  • Support the organization's fundraising efforts and any other internal efforts that may arise
  • Lead and/or attend MFFC public meetings
  • Represent MFFC at related meetings, councils, coalitions, boards, etc., and share MFFC’s position at the city, state, and national level where appropriate
  • Supervise 1-2 volunteers and/or interns
  • Any other related duties as assigned

 

Programs

Youth Program Facilitation & Support

  • Create a safe, welcoming, and empowering environment for youth across all program spaces
  • Support recruitment, onboarding, and supervision of youth program participants (ages 14–21)
  • Co-facilitate workshops, field trips, and youth-led projects that build leadership and life skills
  • Assist in designing interactive, culturally relevant programming that explores systemic issues like food justice, transportation equity, and community health
  • Provide ongoing mentorship and support to youth, including connecting them to resources and opportunities for growth
  • Uphold and model MFFC’s values

Community Engagement & Integration

  • Support youth in organizing and participating in events, community presentations, and civic actions
  • Help coordinate collaborative projects between the youth program and MFFC’s food, fitness, and transportation initiatives
  • Attend local meetings, training, and events to stay informed about community priorities and youth-related issues

Program Operations & Administration

  • Maintain accurate records of youth attendance, timesheets, and program schedules
  • Support the collection and storytelling of program impact, including photos, quotes, and testimonials
  • Assist with evaluation and feedback processes to strengthen programming
  • Support youth employment documentation and logistics in partnership with city and nonprofit partners
  • Any other related duties as assigned 

Qualifications

We will consider exceptional candidates who demonstrate a strong combination of the specific qualifications and skills described below.

 

  • 2+ years of experience working with youth in community, school, or nonprofit settings
  • Experienced in coordinating and facilitating youth programs and workshops for ages 14–19, with a focus on engagement, leadership development, and youth-led initiatives
  • Understanding of youth development, identity, and trauma-informed practices
  • Creative thinker with a collaborative, youth-first mindset
  • Comfortable navigating ambiguity and co-creating with youth rather than always leading
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills, especially with youth from diverse backgrounds
  • Passion for social justice and an interest in issues like food access, health equity, and sustainable transportation
  • Experience working in or with communities of color and multilingual communities; bilingual in Haitian Creole and/or Spanish is a plus
  • Familiarity with or commitment to the Mattapan community; Local applicants from Mattapan, Dorchester, or Roxbury are strongly encouraged to apply
  • Comfort with flexible scheduling, including evenings and some weekends
  • Ability to engage in physical activity (e.g., walking, biking, gardening, community events)
  • Proficiency in tools like Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, and social media platforms
  • Must pass CORI/SORI background check
  • MFFC is an active organization. Staff are required to participate in physical activity i.e. biking, gardening, farming, walking, etc.

Physical Demands/Work Environment

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to:

  • Handle, or feel objects, tools or controls;
  • Reach; traverse; sit (usually for longer periods of time); occasionally ascend/descend; and position self (to) move;
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds;
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate;
  • Job is not subject to significant occupational or environmental hazards;
  • Likelihood of personal injury would be relatively slight;
  • Environmental and work hazards are not present to a measurable degree.

 

Compensation and Benefits

 

Location: Work will be primarily performed Hybrid – In-office in Mattapan, MA.

Schedule: Temporary Part-time, 30 hours per week. Required to work some evenings and weekends to accommodate youth and community availability.

Compensation: The hourly rate range for this position is $20.00 - $24.00/hour and is commensurate with experience.
