JOB TITLE: Physical Therapy AssistantCC/Department: 7770/Physical Therapy Reports to: Director of RehabilitationJOB SUMMARY:Under the immediate supervision of the Director, Rehabilitation Services, the Physical Therapy Assistant will be responsible for administering physical therapy modalities of treatment as supervised by the Physical Therapist. He/She will administer treatments and/or physical agents as directed by the staff physical therapist, after the physical therapist has evaluated the patient. She/He will also assist patients to reach their maximum performance and level of functioning, by providing effective, and quality care for the patient. He/She will also perform other duties as directed by the supervisor. Population serced includes: adolescents, adults, and geriatrics.
POSITION SPECIFIC DUTIES (other duties may be assigned)1 Responsible for providing effective treatment as directed by the physical therapist.2 Provides direct patient care according to the PT treatment plan.3 Ability to observe and evaluate treatment effectively and discuss any changes with the physical therapist.4 Coordinates and assists with directing patient care to ensure patient’s needs are met.5 Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.6 Completes all documentation required by policy, procedure, or regulation.7 Participates in training family members.8 Ensures patient charges are accurate.9 Completes billing sheet accurately by end of day.10 Participates in in-service education programs.
11 Assists with orientation of registry as directed.12 Instruct/In-service other disciplines regarding PT functions.13 Keep abreast of current trends and developments in physical therapy.14 Participates in professional activities in order to continue their own professional development and contribute to that of the profession.15 Adheres to the APTA’s Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice for Physical Therapy.16 Maintains department productivity standards.17 Attends department staff meetings/reads and signs off on all missed staff meeting minutes.
QUALIFICATIONS/JOB REQUIREMENTS:EDUCATION:• Graduation from a two-year physical therapy assistant program approved by the American Physical Therapy Association. (or)Military training, consisting of satisfactory completion of a basic corpsman course of a formal physical therapy assistant course of instruction, which includes a minimum of 550 hours of technical course work and 350 hours of, directed clinical experience.
EXPERIENCE:• At least one year experience in acute care, long term care preferred and as applicable to the needs of the department
CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURE:• Possession of a current valid license as a physical therapy assistant by the California State Board of Medical Examiners or eligibility for such registration at the time of appointment.• Membership in the APTA is highly recommended.• Possess and maintain a current CPR certification through the American Heart Association for the Healthcare Provider.
OTHER SKILLS, ABILITIES & KNOWLEDGE:• Knowledge of the principals and practices of Physical Therapy, with knowledge of practices of other disciplines.• Ability to evaluate, to plan and to carry out a physical therapy rehabilitative program for individuals patients; ability to explain, demonstrate and teach physical therapy rehabilitative measures; ability to supervise supportive personnel; ability to work effectively with others in an inter-disciplinary team relationship; beginning ability to be self-directed and to seek direction and consultation as needed; ability to express oneself clearly both verbally and in written format.• Must have basic computer skills.
