Job Description Summary:

The Position:

Position General Summary:

The Instructor, Florida Scholars Academy (FSA) provides an educational atmosphere where students have the opportunity to reach their full educational potential. The Instructor, Florida Scholars Academy exhibits a passion for, and dedication to, the remediation, acceleration, and academic growth of at-risk students. This position organizes and implements an instructional program resulting in students achieving academic success in accordance with state policies and laws. This position is responsible for teaching assigned academic subjects in residential facilities for the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice students.

Essential Position Functions:

  • Plan, prepare, and implement engaging instructional activities in assigned subject(s) that contribute to a climate where students are actively engaged in meaningful learning experiences.

  • Identify, select, create, and modify instructional resources to meet the needs of the students with varying backgrounds, learning styles, and special needs.

  • Be responsible for the supervision of students assigned to the class.

  • Conduct roll calls, counts, and maintains attendance records.

  • Maintain effective and efficient record keeping procedures.

  • Ensure that order and discipline are maintained in the classroom using effective classroom behavior management techniques.

  • Provide a positive environment in which students are encouraged to be actively engaged in the learning process.

  • Evaluate students and make determinations as to overall progress.

  • Grade student assignments and assessments and follows all grading procedures. Counsel and advise students regarding their academic and behavioral progress.

  • Collaborate with supervisor and peers to enhance the instructional environment for students by participating in activities which include, but are not limited to, team teaching, meetings, professional learning, and professional learning communities.

  • Communicate with students, parents/guardians, and internal and external stakeholders within established timelines.

  • Model professional and ethical standards when dealing with students, parents/guardians, colleagues, and other stakeholders.

  • Ensure that student's growth and achievement are continuous and appropriate for age group, subject area, and/or program classification.

  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, parents/guardians, colleagues, and other stakeholders measured by district/school survey results.

  • Meet specific course and school-wide student performance goals.

  • Demonstrate gains in student performance.

  • Participate in blended learning models, which includes both on-line and classroom instruction and interaction with students at various residential facilities across the state; required to report to an assigned facility.

  • Provide instructional tutoring as directed.

  • Provide  services in person at the assigned facility to meet the needs of students under the supervision of the Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ).  

  • Support any other academic related topic established at the discretion of the Superintendent of Schools, Florida Scholars Academy, Regional Director, Florida Scholars Academy, or Instructional Leader, Florida Scholars Academy.

  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of basic technology, including software applications, hardware, and navigating digital tools, with the ability to effectively apply them to daily tasks and troubleshoot common issues.

  • Meet professional obligations through efficient work habits such as, meeting deadlines, honoring schedules, coordinating resources and meetings in an effective and timely manner, and demonstrating respect for others.

  • All work responsibilities are subject to having performance goals and/or targets established.

Minimum Requirements:

Education/Licensure/Certification:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college/university

  • Valid Florida Professional Teaching Certificate in content area assigned OR proof of active enrollment in a state-approved EPI or MAT program AND either a valid Florida state-issued Statement of Eligibility OR valid Temporary Certificate in content area assigned

  • Exceptional Student Educational (ESE) Certification, preferred

  • Gifted Endorsement, preferred

  • English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Endorsement, preferred

  • Reading Endorsement, preferred

Experience:

  • Teaching experience within subject area OR successful completion of an FLVS instructional internship program OR current enrollment in an approved EPI or MAT program

Physical Requirements and Environmental Conditions:

  • Frequency of travel: Daily travel is required to the assigned residential facility. Frequent travel is required for meetings, training, and conferences; location may vary and may require overnight stays.
