The Department of Chemical Biology and Therapeutics is seeking a highly motivated Lead Researcher with a background in Automation and Engineering to join their team. This role plays a crucial role in designing and operating automated systems to handle and manage the St. Jude Compound Collection, ensuring it is readily available, accurately identified, and efficiently handled.
The Chemical Biology and Therapeutics (CBT) Department formulates innovative chemical and chemoinformatic solutions to resolve salient problems in biology and medicine. Fundamental research programs to uncover underlying biological processes are complemented by translational centers that house chemical synthesis, screening, and computational capabilities that mirror cutting-edge biotech/pharma operations, resources rarely accessible at academic institutions.
Job Responsibilities:
Operate various automated sample storage systems (e.g., Hamilton Verso Store, Azenta Sample Store).
Evaluate and implement automated storage solutions to maximize the capacity and accessibility of chemical libraries.
Monitor and optimize environmental conditions (i.e. temperature, humidity) for manual and automated chemical storage to ensure compound stability over time.
Operate automated liquid handling instrumentation (e.g., Agilent Bravo, HighRes Biosolutions Prime, Tecan Evo, Hamilton STAR, Beckman Coulter Echo) to assist with liquid chemical workflows.
Design and script new liquid handling methods using proprietary software to optimize existing workflows and implement novel solutions.
Reformat large chemical libraries using liquid handling solutions to make chemical samples readily available for collaborative research projects.
Perform regular quality assessment and calibration of liquid handling tools to ensure accurate performance.
Experience using Titian Mosaic or other sample management software preferred.
Set up new workflows using sample management software to streamline sample handling and distribution processes.
Manage a LIMS environment to support various integrations with automated stores and robot platforms.
Troubleshoot and resolve automated equipment issues, which may involve diagnosing mechanical, electrical, or software problems.
Serve as primary contact between the team and various vendors to provide regular maintenance, repairs, and remote support services for automated equipment.
Ensure that sample management processes meet industry and safety standards.
Research emerging technologies in laboratory automation; implement new methods to ensure the team’s processes stay current in the field.
Train new personnel in the use of automated equipment.
Experience managing or mentoring personnel is preferred but not required.
Minimum Education and/or Training:
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant scientific area is required
Minimum Experience:
5+ years of research experience is required
3+ years of experience is required with a Master’s degree
No prior experience required with a PHD
Strong knowledge and experience in understanding and application of underlying principles related to techniques being performed
Experience in R&D methods and processes in lab setting, and execution of research projects for the laboratory preferred
Proven performance in earlier role/comparable role
Compensation
In recognition of certain U.S. state and municipal pay transparency laws, St. Jude is including a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This is an estimate offered in good faith and a specific salary offer takes into account factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the salary range and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current salary range is $60,320 - $105,040 per year for the role of Lead Researcher in Automation.Explore our exceptional benefits!
