Job Summary:

The State Tax Accountant III role is responsible for assisting in the preparation and development of the State and Local Income Tax team's tax accounting items and co-managing the timely and accurate delivery of state compliance filing obligations as well as contributing to any ad hoc state tax projects.

Depth & Scope:

• Assists with quarterly delivery and analysis of tax accounting items including current/deferred tax rate calculations, tracking state tax credits and deferred tax assets, and calculating tax reserves, providing timely updates to the Tax Accounting team regarding these items
• Assists in the maintenance of all state apportionment schedules for the US (both Retail and Wholesale).  Within this responsibility, the individual will work with State Tax Planning prior to each quarter end to understand where it may be necessary to change/revise rates, apportionment methodology, etc.
• Assists with collection of state tax data for state PTR work.  Detailed responsibilities include ensuring tax liabilities are accurately reflected in the tax calendar; ensuring return workpapers accurately reflect tax credit utilization and carry forwards; ensuring return workpapers accurately reflect NOL utilization and carry forwards; and aggregate other state return data necessary to track deferred tax assets
• Assists with special state tax projects (e.g., documentation for state audits, tax planning calculations, amended returns, etc.)
• Assists with and co-manage the preparation, review, and finalization of state income and franchise tax compliance items, including estimates, returns, state apportionment, and addressing state tax notices
• Contributes to the strategic direction of the State and Local Tax team by keeping current on emerging issues, industry trends, and relevant accounting changes
• Able to work autonomously and flexibly, pivoting daily duties as needed and efficiently prioritizing work needs of the group with minimal supervision
• Ensures ongoing communication with the team on the status/progress of projects, issues, and points of interest
• Helps identify and drive process improvements related to all aspects of the State and Local Tax team's obligations and methodologies, so to enhance the overall process by reducing complexity and minimizing error and time consumption
• Provides technical expertise and analysis to management and business partners
• Works across and support other finance/tax teams, coordinating financial information requests and providing state tax data as needed

Education & Experience:

• Bachelor's Degree in accounting
• 5+ years tax accounting experience with emphasis on State and Local Income Tax
• Experience with Financial Institutions preferred
• CPA/MS/MBA preferred
• Must be detail oriented and possess problem-solving skills
• Proficient in oral and written interpersonal communication and can effectively communicate with all levels of staff and management

• Monitors service, productivity and assess efficiency levels within own function and implement continuous process / performance improvements where opportunities exists
• Actively manages relationships within and across various business lines, corporate and/or control functions and ensure alignment with enterprise and/or regulatory requirements
• Keeps abreast of emerging issues, trends, and evolving regulatory requirements and assess potential impacts
• Maintains a culture of risk management and control, supported by effective processes in alignment with risk appetite
• Ensures respective programs/policies/practices are well managed, meet business needs, complies with internal and external requirements, and aligns with business priorities
