Director, AP Instructional Services

College Board – AP & Instruction / AP Program Access

About the Team

The AP Access team’s goal is to extend the growth and reach of the AP Program to serve the middle third of high school students by growing participation, serving more underrepresented students, and supporting teachers and schools to help students succeed. The Instructional Services team within this department is dedicated to bringing innovative approaches to AP teaching and learning to scale that are inspired by and build on the needs, experiences, and insights of our educator and student communities.

We work closely with our colleagues across AP and Instruction and in Communications and Marketing to ensure that we are aligned in all efforts to promote the work of AP Courses and Programs to a wide range of audiences including students, parents, educators, policymakers, the media, member organizations and staff.  

The Advanced Placement Program® (AP) enables willing and academically prepared students to pursue college-level studies while still in high school. The program consists of college-level courses developed by the AP Program that high schools can choose to offer, and corresponding exams administered once a year.

About the Opportunity 

AP is committed to deepening teacher instruction and elevating students’ learning potential by providing instructional resources and professional learning programs, both in person and online. These instructional resources include instructional videos, lab manuals and project manuals for AP courses where applicable. Professional learning (PL) programs include AP Summer Institutes and one day workshops, AP Mentoring, and the AP Project Based Learning (PBL) Series. As Director, AP Instructional Services, you’ll be part of a team that delivers high quality professional learning programs and instructional resources and is committed to expanding innovative teaching and learning experiences such as the AP PBL Series.

AP PL Content Development and Committee Management (40%)

  • Direct and manage teachers, through the content submission, review, and approval processes for new content in collaboration with internal and external subject matter experts across assigned AP courses. 
  • Manage teams of internal and external subject matter experts in the creation of teacher and facilitator resources to support the expansion of AP PL.
  • Collaborate with PL team to manage committee and facilitator contracting, orientation, and training.
  • Provide constructive feedback to internal and external subject matter experts to develop high quality professional learning and instructional resources.

Professional Learning and Instructional Resources Development Processes (40%)

  • Inform and maintain processes that support the delivery of high-quality PL and instructional services at scale across AP subjects.
  • Confirm project/PL consistency and alignment with internal and external professional learning requirements.
  • Collaborate with AP PL & Course audit team to optimize use of PL system for all new AP Instructional Services implementation (e.g., cultivating a PL teacher community). 
  • Train and manage internal staff to inform teacher and facilitator resources related to the AP Instructional Services. 
  • Ensure CEU (IACET/state) provider requirements are met for all new and existing professional learning event offerings.
  • Collaborate with research partners to study the impact of professional learning programs and instructional resources on teaching and learning to inform continuous improvement plans.
  • Ensure PL content alignment with course frameworks, exams, and AP Classroom content. 
  • Conduct an audit of AP Daily and re-establish baseline expectations and anticipated outcomes focusing on participation, instructional approaches, and impact. 
  • Identifyviable approaches to instructional videos and/or processes that ensure student interest and success on the AP exams. 
  • Develop and manage the execution of new instructional video content. 
  • Maintain and improve current PL content, identify longer term programmatic needs and develop a plan to address those needs.

New PL Workshop Development, Pilots, and Implementation (20%)

  • Identify and prioritize new PL opportunities for development including alternate models to expand options for engaging AP teachers.
  • Develop new PL opportunities based on program need and/or stakeholder request in collaboration with AP educators and other subject matter experts. 
  • Execute pilot activities for new PL workshops and instructional resources. 
  • Determine scalability for additional credentials for teaching specific AP access courses through PL opportunities.

 To qualify for this role, you must have: 

  • Teaching expertise and experience
  • A STEM background (preferred) 
  • Strong organization and prioritization skills and the proven ability to move forward multiple projects in concert, both independently and as a member of the team
  • Proven ability to set vision and direction then manage individuals to meet aligned goals and metrics
  • Adept problem-solving skills, including using data to inform decisions and actions
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including facilitating meetings and presenting remotely and in-person to groups of 15 or more
  • Proven ability to build relationships and influence others to action
  • A passion for supporting educational and career opportunities for millions of students
  • Outstanding knowledge of emerging trends and best practices in high impact instructional practices such as PBL 
  • Excellent PowerPoint, Word, Excel, and MS Project skills
  • Bachelor’s degree is required
  • Authorization to work in the United States
