General Summary: 

Leads the development and execution of financial hedging strategies to manage market risks associated with power generation, load obligations, and renewable assets within the MISO market.  This position oversees significant external business and contractual relationships.


 Key Responsibilities: 


REC Power Supply Portfolio Management
Actively manages short-term energy portfolio position (0 to 24 months) and mid-term energy portfolio position (25-60 months).

  • Leads daily energy market operations, including market participation, offer submittals, trade execution, and reporting. Analyzes MISO market conditions, generation offers, load forecasts, and load management plans; instructs operational adjustments as needed.
  • Develops and executes comprehensive hedging strategies for power and commodity risk management in the MISO market by utilizing forwards, swaps, options, HRCO’s, etc. Monitors exposure to basis, congestion, DA-RT exposure, and oversees hedge performance reporting.
  • Manages trading strategies and structured products to optimize REC’s portfolio. Partners with origination and trading teams to identify hedge opportunities and structure contracts that align with market outlook and asset risk profiles.
  • Negotiates and executes power purchase agreements, power sales agreements and ZRC sales in the MISO Capacity Market.
  • Oversees credit, compliance, and counterparty agreements, ensuring all transactions align with internal policies and regulatory frameworks. Analyzes credit requirements for MISO and third-party markets; coordinates with finance to maintain credit readiness. Manages governing agreements such as ISDA, NAEMA, and EEI.
  • Guides modeling and forecasting efforts related to power pricing, load behavior, asset performance, and market risk. Interprets the impact of regulatory shifts, transmission congestion, and forward fundamentals on portfolio positioning and strategy.
  • Maintains strategic market engagement, monitoring developments in wholesale/retail markets, technology trends, and evolving regulations. Provides recurring and ad-hoc updates to senior leadership and maintains relationships with suppliers, brokers, and clearinghouses.

  

MISO Market
Serve as the organization’s primary point of contact for all matters related to the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) market


  • Represents REC in MISO stakeholder processes, including participation in user groups, committees, and working groups (e.g., RSC, PAC, MSC, RECB). Supports or leads responses to stakeholder surveys, comment periods, and formal filings.
  • Monitors and communicates regulatory developments, market reforms, and stakeholder initiatives within MISO. Prepares internal briefings, strategic recommendations, and compliance updates related to evolving market rules and tariff changes
  • Collaborates cross-functionally with internal teams (e.g., legal, regulatory, trading, operations) to assess the business impact of MISO tariff filings, market design proposals, and policy shifts. Provides training and updates to ensure internal alignment and readiness.
  • Maintains active engagement with external stakeholders, cultivating relationships with MISO staff, industry peers, and trade groups to stay informed, exchange insights, and influence policy when appropriate. Contributes to strategic planning by identifying market risks and opportunities.




Requirements

 Job Criteria: Education & Experience Knowledge typically acquired through a bachelor’s degree in business, finance, economics, math, or related field and a minimum of eight years of experience in energy trading, risk management, or portfolio analytics, with at least five (5) of those years of experience with wholesale electric or natural gas markets, or similar commodities, is required. Strong knowledge of power market dynamics, particularly in MISO (e.g., ARR/FTR markets, resource adequacy, dispatch mechanics) is preferred.


Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Extensive knowledge of daily energy market activities, strategies, forward price curves, bilateral transactions, trading in pools (I.e. MISO, SPP, etc.) and the use of financial and physical instruments to mitigate price volatility. 
  • Ability to lead and collaborate closely with trading, operations, finance, and risk management teams to ensure alignment of hedging strategies with corporate risk tolerance and profitability targets.
  • Deep knowledge of MISO market operations, regulations, policies, standards, and procedures of organizations regulating and affecting energy portfolio decisions, including the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.
  • Demonstrates strong leadership in project management, creative problem-solving, and timely decision-making across complex initiatives.
  • Builds high-performing teams, fosters trust and credibility, and adapts flexibly to shifting business needs and environments.
  • Effectively manages multiple high-pressure challenges by prioritizing demands, delegating responsibilities, and communicating clearly across technical and executive levels.
  • Resolves conflicts and builds consensus on divisive issues through diplomacy, persuasion, and logical negotiation.
  • Applies analytical thinking and utilizes advanced software tools for financial modeling, data interpretation, and executive-level presentations.
