About the Job:

The Airport Design & Construction department is seeking a Technical Coordinator, Civil Projects with a strong foundation in civil infrastructure to support the successful delivery of capital improvement projects at San Diego International Airport, including contributions to the New T1 program, the largest civil engineering project currently underway at a U.S. airport.

This position provides technical support to project managers throughout the full project lifecycle—from early design development through construction and closeout. The Technical Coordinator will collaborate with design consultants to review plans and specifications, help track project scope, schedule, and budget, and ensure alignment with airport and regulatory standards. Proficiency in CAD and a strong understanding of civil plans and specifications are essential.

The role also involves coordinating with contractors, assisting with documentation and permitting, and supporting internal stakeholder communication. The ideal candidate brings a proactive approach, attention to detail, and the ability to work seamlessly across technical disciplines and construction environments.

What You’ll Do:

• Project Coordination: Supports all phases of civil project delivery, including planning, design, construction, cost control, scheduling, and lifecycle performance.
• Technical Support: Assists with scope development, reviews submittals and change orders, tracks permits and safety requirements, and performs site observations.
• Contractor and Stakeholder Liaison: Coordinates contractor activities, documentation, and communications; ensures alignment with internal teams and project goals.
• Issue Resolution and Communication: Understands project details, facilitates decision-making, addresses concerns, and supports project close-out processes.
• Documentation and Research: Maintains records, conducts research, supports reporting and training efforts, and integrates best practices and sustainability trends.

The Skills You Need:

1. Technical Skills – Reviews and comments on project design and construction drawings and specifications; reviews plans, schedules, and project costs for impacts to business objectives and operations; communicates information effectively; problem solves and makes decisions accordingly; works with established standards and demonstrates strong attention to detail. Able to create technical exhibits using AutoCAD and other design software programs.
2. Facilitation Skills – Self motivates, works autonomously and collaboratively, coordinates and drives deliverables, relationships, and expectations; completes work objectives, solicits support for ideas, projects, and solutions.
3. Project Management Skills – Competently communicates project requirements, determines processes required to achieve project strategies; fosters collaboration to ensure timely completion of projects.

The Experience You Need to Have**:

• Five years of construction project management, civil design or engineering experience, project cost controls, construction safety, or any equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience.
• Associate degree in construction, engineering, architecture, project management, or a closely related field.

Preferred Experience, Education, Certification, and Licenses:

• Experience with large/medium mixed-use, utility, roadway, or site development projects preferred.
• Possession of an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification in the State of California, or the ability to obtain, is preferred.
• Designation as a Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM), Lean Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt (LSSGB), Project Management Professional (PMP), Certified Maintenance and Reliability Professional (CMRP).
