Are you passionate about student success and ready to launch your career in higher education? The College of Arts & Sciences is looking for an Academic Advisor I that will be responsible for driving engagement and empowering students to achieve their academic and career goals in the Department of Biology. This position will play a vital role in maximizing undergraduate student retention by building relationships with students and clarifying procedures and academic requirements for specific programs or majors. Join our team as an Academic Advisor I and help guide students on their academic journey from orientation to graduation.
Opportunities to Contribute:
Advise Students
Collaborate with students to understand and develop realistic and attainable educational and academic goals.
Provide input on related majors, minors, future education, and career options that best align with goals.
Assist students with academic processes such as registration, add/drop, Q drops, withdrawals, and change of curriculum submissions.
Counsel students regarding core and degree course selection and implication of selected courses and/or exception requests.
Deliver Student Success and Retention Strategies
Consistently engage the student population utilizing outreach methods to keep students informed of critical and relevant personal, academic, and professional topics.
Proactively share available academic, professional, and health and wellness resources such as the Academic Success Center, Career Center, Student Organizations, Counseling & Psychological Services, or Disability Resources.
Actively monitors students’ progress by reviewing and assessing academic records.
Assist in the planning and/or delivery of department related advising, student success, retention events, and academic campaigns.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree.
A well-qualified candidate may also possess:
Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Genetics, Nutrition, or related field.
Additional education in higher education, student affairs, or counseling.
Internship, work-study, or volunteer roles in advising offices, residence life, student affairs, or orientation programs.
Experience in peer mentorship, peer advising, or student leadership roles.
Experience in public speaking, presentations, or training programs.
Writing experience such as newsletters, reports, or social media campaigns.
Basic understanding of academic policies, degree requirements, and FERPA.
Prior collaboration with faculty and campus resources to support student success.
Previous responsibilities in advising, counseling, or mentoring.
Aptitude for project management, event planning or multitasking roles.
Familiarity with student information systems (SIS), degree audit tools, and advising platforms (e.g., Banner, PeopleSoft, DegreeWorks).
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and virtual meeting tools (e.g., Zoom, Teams).
NACADA or TEXAAN certificate of participation
Knowledge of Texas A&M advising programs & systems such as Compass and Howdy
Salary: $45,000.00
