Description

We’re Hiring: Youth Program Coordinator
Location: Penobscot Bay YMCA Afterschool Program and Day Camp Locations
Full-Time: Afternoons, Early Evenings, Occasional Weekends

Are you passionate about shaping meaningful experiences for kids? Do you thrive in fast-paced, mission-driven environments where your leadership truly matters? The Penobscot Bay YMCA is looking for a Youth Program Coordinator to help lead our Afterschool and Summer Camp programs—bringing creativity, consistency, and care to everything we offer our families.

Who You Are:

  • A strong communicator and creative problem-solver
  • Comfortable leading a team and creating structure in dynamic environments
  • Passionate about youth development, equity, and inclusion
  • Organized, dependable, and responsive—especially with families
  • Available during program hours (typically afternoons and some weekends)

In this role, you’ll work alongside the Director of Sports, Camp, and Afterschool Programs to ensure our youth programs are safe, enriching, and well-executed. From developing hands-on STEAM activities to mentoring part-time staff, supporting volunteers, and connecting with parents—you’ll be a key player in delivering quality experiences that strengthen our community. You will ensure a safe, engaging, and organized environment for children and families, while also serving as a key support to alleviate workload and maintain continuity across youth programs.

Why Join Us?

  • Competitive Benefits – PTO, paid holidays, health, dental, vision insurance, life & disability coverage
  • Retirement Program – Day 1 access to retirement savings, with a 10% match from the YMCA after two years
  • Family Membership Perks – Enjoy a free annual YMCA family membership ($972 value!)
  • A Role That Makes a Difference –  The PenBay Y is a community cornerstone where all people can connect, grow, and thrive, and you are a vital part of that vision.

Requirements

Essential Functions

  • Program Leadership & Delivery: Provide hands-on leadership, oversight of daily operations, and STEAM-curriculum creation for Afterschool and Summer Day Camp programs. Act as a consistent and visible presence during programming hours, fostering a culture of safety, inclusion, and fun.
  • Program Promotion & Communication: Collaborate with leadership to develop and distribute clear, engaging marketing materials and program communications, including flyers, newsletters, and social media content for youth programs.
  • Program Growth & Improvement: Regularly assess program quality and participant experience. Offer ideas and leadership for innovation, expansion, and continuous improvement across all youth initiatives.
  • Team Support & Supervision: Assist with recruiting, hiring, training, scheduling, and supervising part-time staff across youth programs. Serve as a mentor and coach to frontline team members, ensuring staff are supported, engaged, and prepared to succeed.
  • Operational Execution: Maintain a strong working knowledge of program schedules, facilities, and logistics to ensure smooth daily operation. Help coordinate transportation, supply needs, snacks, and transitions between program elements.
  • Family & Community Engagement: Serve as a responsive point of contact for parents and guardians, addressing questions, concerns, and suggestions with empathy and professionalism. Support outreach and relationship-building with local schools, organizations, and community partners.
  • Volunteer Coordination: Help recruit, schedule, and engage volunteers to enhance program delivery, ensuring they are equipped to serve and feel valued as part of our youth development mission.\

Qualifications

  • Ability to lead a team and create a positive, productive environment.
  • CPR/First Aid certification preferred (or willingness to obtain).
  • Must be available to occasionally work evenings and weekends based on program needs.
