About the Job
The Events and Engagement Officer is a key member of the Oklahoma Department of Libraries' Public Information Office, working to strengthen public engagement and raise the visibility of the agency’s programs and services. This includes coordinating the agency’s participation in public events such as conferences, media campaigns, and statewide initiatives that increase visibility for library and archival programs and services.
In addition, the Officer serves as Director of the Oklahoma Center for the Book (OCB), a program of the Oklahoma Department of Libraries and a state affiliate of the Library of Congress Center for the Book. Established over 35 years ago, the Oklahoma Center for the Book celebrates books, reading, and Oklahoma’s literary heritage through a variety of public programs. The Officer also works closely with the Friends of the Oklahoma Center for the Book, a volunteer-led nonprofit that supports the Center through fundraising, advocacy, and strategic input.
This is a highly collaborative, public-facing position ideal for someone with strong event and program coordination skills, a passion for Oklahoma’s literary and cultural landscape, and the ability to build meaningful partnerships that expand access to literary and educational opportunities statewide.
Under the direction of the Marketing and Communications Director, the Events and Engagement Officer is responsible for planning and executing high-profile events and public engagement initiatives that align with the mission of the Oklahoma Department of Libraries. The Officer works across departments and state agencies to support strategic outreach and serves as a connector between ODL and external partners.
As Director of the Oklahoma Center for the Book, the Officer coordinates programming and initiatives of the Center, including the Oklahoma Book Awards, Read Across Oklahoma, My Favorite Book, and the state’s participation in the National Book Festival. Responsibilities include event planning, timeline and budget management, vendor and partner coordination, community engagement, maintaining and cultivating sponsorships, and identifying and applying for grant opportunities.
Plans, organizes and/or directs a component of an agency or institutional program or a major division, program, or function established to accomplish a basic goal or mission of the agency.
Prepares administrative, statistical and/or fiscal documents pertaining to departmental activity.
Provides supervision or direction to assigned staff in planning, promoting, and implementing programs in accordance with agency policies and goals.
Advises on future resource requirements, priorities for programs and activities; estimates timetables for accomplishing assigned activities; develops policies, rules, and regulations consistent with state and federal laws pertaining to the administration of programs.
Plans, develops and conducts training, seminars, meetings, or clinics as required; represents the agency at meetings, seminars, and conferences.
Develops contract or grant proposals for agency programs.
Identifies and cultivates partnerships and sponsorships to support agency programs, including outreach to potential collaborators, funders, and community stakeholders.
Bachelor’s degree in business, public administration, or a related field; and
Three years of professional-level experience in business, or public administration; or
An equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience developing, managing, or evaluating public programs or events, ideally in a cultural, educational, or literary setting
Experience in building and maintaining community partnerships or sponsorships
Experience representing an organization at public events, conferences, or media engagements
Experience writing grant proposals and managing grant-funded programs
Knowledge of the methods of organization and management or public administration;
Knowledge of agency policies and procedures;
Knowledge of grant or contract program requirements;
Knowledge of the legislative process;
Knowledge of basic research and statistical techniques;
Knowledge of federal and state laws and regulations relating to administration of assigned programs; and of supervisory principles and practices.
Knowledge of English usage, including grammar and composition
Knowledge of public relations, and advertising principles and techniques
Knowledge of Oklahoma’s literary or cultural landscape
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others;
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing;
Ability to establish and develop training programs;
Ability to exercise good judgment in analyzing situations and making decisions; and to organize and present facts and opinions.
Ability to plan and monitor budgets; apply for grants
Ability to build partnerships and work with sponsors
Ability to promote programs and engage the public
